About The Wind Section

The Wind Section are specialists in the supply and repair of Brass & Woodwind musical Instruments. We are located in central Edinburgh and trade from a residential area within the Edinburgh Newtown. We are within walking distance of the main bus and train stations.

We offer a full range of wind instruments from solid silver flutes and high end clarinets to all things brass, trombones & Xeno trumpets etc.

We have experienced and skilled technicians on hand to either restore instruments back to their former glory or make emergency adjustments prior to a concert.

Our staff understand how important it is to trial instruments before committing to purchase, and to enable this we have a trial studio available to all customers.

Malcolm Kirkpatrick


A trombonist and piano player, Malcolm ran the Falkirk branch of Normans for many years, and lectured in instrument repair. An opportunity arose to for Malcolm to establish a shop in Edinburgh offering the full range of wind instruments, together with an experienced repair department. Now based in the elegant surroundings of Edinburgh’s ‘New Town’, The Wind Section offers a great range of instruments from stock, together with a demo studio to try out instruments and accessories. Friendly, expert advice is always on hand, and a full range of rental schemes and finance facilities can help with your dream purchase. Jonathan Griffin

Workshop manager

Graduated from the prestigious Newark College in 1990. Following various repair posts in England, Jonathan moved to Scotland in 1995 where he ran the workshop for Kirkpatrick’s Musical Instrument Repairs. In 2000 Jonathan brought his skills to Edinburgh and has since, built an enviable reputation with many of Scotland’s saxophonists, flute and clarinet players in both jazz and orchestral circles.

Ruth Prowse

Woodwind technician

Studied saxophone performance at Napier University graduating with a first class BMus (hons) degree in 2005. After a spell of working freelance managing local bands and musicians Ruth joined the team at The Wind Section in 2007. Under Jonathan’s guidance she is already establishing herself as a fine woodwind repair specialist.
