Meet The Team

Malcolm Kirkpatrick - Managing Director

An accomplished trombonist and pianist (and a not so accomplished golfer!), Malcolm has been involved in the musical instrument industry for more years than he cares to remember! He started his career with his own brass and woodwind instrument repair business and quickly built up an enviable reputation with many of the country’s top musicians. Malcolm soon moved over to the ‘dark side’ of retail and, following a number of years as manager of Normans Falkirk branch, an opportunity arose to establish The Wind Section in Edinburgh which he has built into one of the leading musical instrument retailers in the UK. Malcolm has a fantastic knowledge of all brass and woodwind instruments but has a particular interest in French horns and clarinets.

Gemma Proudfoot - Sales Manager

Gemma joined The Wind Section team in 2006 after achieving a BA in Music at Edinburgh Napier University. Her musical journey started when she took up trumpet lessons at primary school and over the years she has played in orchestras, wind bands, jazz bands, soul bands, funk bands, big bands, brass bands and one night only in a hoedown band! Sadly, due to work commitments and the usual comings and goings of life, she rarely gets the chance to play and now spends her time helping others begin or continue their own musical journey through her work at The Wind Section. When not at work, Gemma enjoys spending time at home relaxing and walking her wee dog, Juno.

Alex Wilson - Marketing Manager

Alex is a drummer so has always enjoyed hanging around with musicians! He has years of playing experience in concert bands, big bands, wedding bands and brass bands including an enjoyable number of years in the percussion team of the CWS (Glasgow) brass band (now known as The Cooperation Band) where he played under some of the brass band world’s biggest names including Howard Snell, Richard Evans, Steven Sykes and Geoffrey Brand. One of Alex’s highlights of his time in the band was their tour of Australia and New Zealand which included a sell-out performance at the Sydney Opera House. Alex is the ‘new boy’ of The Wind Section having only joined in January 2022 but he brings a wealth of e-commerce and marketing experience with him to his new role and he’s looking forward to helping the company go from strength to strength.
